Aviation Magnet
The Aviation Science Magnet Program at Miramar High School is unique in Broward County and offers qualified students an unprecedented and exciting opportunity! The program is designed to prepare students interested in aviation for a variety of post-secondary programs leading to careers in the aviation industry through rigorous AP and dual enrollment classes that qualify all aviation students as college and career ready. In addition to academic courses, 9th and 10th graders will receive core aviation science and aerospace technology courses that cover such topics as flight theory, navigation aerodynamics, design and building of rockets, construction of model aircrafts, components of a jet engines, history of flight, and meteorology just to list a few. In the 11th and 12th grades, students who have successfully completed the introductory courses, have the requisite GPA and passed the College Placement Test will have the opportunity to earn up to 18 college credits in their chosen aviation specialty as part of a dual enrollment partnership with Broward College’s Aviation Institute, which is located at North Perry Airport. Dual enrollment courses consist of Airline and Airport Management, Aviation Safety, Aviation History, and Aeronautical and Navigational Science. Students will also have the opportunity to take Air Traffic Control, Airframe and Powerplant courses and earn college credit that can be used to earn their A.S. degree and FAA industry certification. Students who successfully completes the Aerospace I, II, III curriculum will qualify for the Florida Gold Seal Vocational Scholarship Award and FAA industry certification. Students will also benefit from a wide array of exciting and educational field trips to different aviation organizations and colleges. Civil Air Patrol
There is much more to Miramar High School's Aviation Science Program than academics. In addition, many Aviation Science magnet students participate in Miramar High School's Civil Air Patrol Squadron. The Civil Patrol, which is also known as CAP, is an after school program that uses aviation as its cornerstone. Cadets participate in a 16-step program that includes aerospace education, leadership training, physical fitness training, and moral leadership training. Cadets may compete for academic scholarships to further their aviation studies. In addition, cadets who earn officer status may enter the Air Force with airman first class status.
